This end-of-financial year, we want to share an inspiring story with you—one that highlights the power of resilience and the transformative impact of education.

Meet Georgetta, a remarkable 17-year-old from Sierra Leone who embodies strength and determination. Despite facing hunger, illness, and financial constraints, Georgetta's love for learning and her passion for life drives her forward:

In Sierra Leone, girls just like Georgetta face major barriers when accessing their right to an education. Extreme poverty means many parents cannot afford to send their girls to school or provide nutritional food for them. Social and cultural barriers means that girls are the first ones in the family to stay at home to cook and clean, or leave school to work from a young age.

These were all very real possibilities for Georgetta, who, before One Girl, did not eat lunch nor have essential items like a school bag or text books.

Since becoming a One Girl scholar, Georgetta's life has turned around. She is not only going to school everyday, she is thriving in life. And because of this transformation, she is working towards a future she never knew possible. She now has dreams of going to university and giving back to her community:

“One girl has helped me greatly. They have contributed greatly in my education, paying for my extra classes, providing me with free sanitary pads, giving me lunch, transport, giving me bag, books, pen, calculator, shoes, uniform and solar light so in the evening I can study at home. Like... everything a girl needs for her to be a safe person in school, I'm having it.

I want to be an accountant and a successful person in life. I want to help people, just like One Girl has helped me, because I know many people are going through similar situations. I want to give back as One Girl has done for me.”

$420 can provide 2 scholars with a back-to-school kit, which includes a school bag, books, pen, uniforms, shoes, hats, calculator, geometry set and much more.
$2,250 contributes to supporting a One Girl Scholar inside and outside the classroom for an entire year, by breaking down the financial, cultural, and social barriers a girl in Sierra Leone faces.
